What is Viagra?
Pfizer introduced Sildenafil in 1996 as the original remedy for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It was the FDA’s first approval for treating ED and has remained one of the most widely used medications, with Cialis as its primary competitor. In Canada, over 3 million men aged 40 and above are estimated to experience ED. Viagra works quickly by relaxing smooth muscles, increasing blood flow to the penis, aiding in the initiation and maintenance of an erection. This improved blood circulation leads to a stronger erection and improved ability to sustain it.
Viagra belongs to the PED5 inhibitor class. It doesn’t cause an erection on its own; sexual stimulation is necessary. These inhibitors don’t impact libido, requiring genuine sexual arousal for an erection. Viagra is effective when inadequate blood flow is the main cause of ED. However, if a hormonal imbalance is the root cause, Viagra might not be the suitable solution, necessitating alternative treatments.
Viagra and Cialis differ notably in their active duration in the body. Viagra’s effects last approximately 4-6 hours and act faster compared to Cialis. Due to its roughly 6-hour effectiveness, additional doses might be needed based on individual requirements. It’s recommended to take Viagra about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
IMPORTANT: Viagra doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.). It’s advisable to use alternative protection methods like latex condoms to prevent pregnancy and STD transmission.
What’s the recommended dosage?
This medication is usually taken orally, with or without food. Viagra is commonly used as needed, at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Dosage depends on individual medical conditions and should be discussed with a physician. For most men, a beneficial dosage would be 1 tablet taken 30 minutes before sexual activity. It’s crucial not to exceed one tablet daily.
